2000 C230 cant turn the electronic key in the ignition

I have a 2000 C230 Kompressor and can not turn the electronic key in the ignition. I have used the mechanical key (by sticking it in the shift console to hit the release switch) to be able to move the shift lever out Park into Neutral or back to Park.
