2000 Mazda Protege Transmission Does Shift Into Overdrive Button On Shifter

The transmission does not shift into overdrive when the overdrive button on the shifter lever is pressed. There are no other transmission issues. Is this a simple "button" issue, or perhaps a fuse, or is it something more serious?

the wiring needs to be checked to see if it a switch. there should be 12 volts to one side and 12 volts passing when activated.
