Overheating of Protege.

My 2000 Protege overheated within 10 minutes of starting (according to guage) in winter but absolutely no heat from heater. I let it cool down for a few minutes, drove it and it overheated again after about 10 minutes, still no heat from heater. Coolant level was good, rad was not frozen. Next day all was fine. A parts guy said it's the thermostat but I think the heater gets water circulation despite a stat stuck shut? What could have caused the overheating? I'm afraid it will happen again.

If the thermostat is okay -try checking the air blend door/actuator

I had the same problem. I was told it was the thermostat, so I replaced it. Then I was told it was my waterpump, I replaced that, then heater core, and I replaced that. It ended up being a clog in the system. The cheap and smartest thing you can do is take it somewhere and have the system power flushed.
