heat won't work it blows just regular air a friend says that I have to replace the unit that closes and opens the air vent system how do I change that or can it be fixed? instead of buying a new unit

It is the air mix actuator you should be looking at and here are the test procedures.

AIR MIX ACTUATOR

1. Remove dashboard. Disconnect air mix actuator harness connector. Apply battery voltage to terminal "F" of air mix actuator harness connector, and ground to terminal "E". See Fig. 19. Ensure air mix door moves to full cold position.

2. Connect DVOM between terminals "A" and "B" of actuator harness connector. While observing DVOM, reverse battery polarity
between terminals "F" and "E" of actuator harness connector. Ensure resistance reading changes progressively from 800 ohms to 5200 ohms as air mix door moves from maximum cold position to maximum hot position. Replace actuator if it does not test as specified.
