2000 Kia Sephia Driving Friends House Went Stop Sign Heard Really High

okay. so i was driving to my friends house.
went to stop at a stop sign and heard a really high pitched whine.
when i went to go again the car didnt move.
it still turns on and everything and you can move the gear shaft but it wont go anywhere.
i had to have my friend tow it to my house.
once we got to the house we threw it into neutral and pushed the rest of the way.
just curious as of to what it might be..

check trans fluid first if you are able then have a trans guy scan for codes your trans may be needing a rebuild though
