This is about a 2000 Jeep Cherokee 4.0L 6 cylinder. It all started a few months ago when my a/c quit working. Was just going to live without since it had only been about a year since I last put freon in it. It blows kinda cool, but not cold and kinda warm, but not hot. It almost seems like it stays the same temperature wether the heater or a/c is on. I figure it was the a/c compressor and I didn't have money to replace it. So months later (now) when ever I apply the brakes or take my foot off the accelerator it makes a humming noise. This noise gets louder the faster I am going and the harder I step on the brakes. Could this issue and my suspected a/c compressor issues be related? If not what is the real problem I am having here?
Also when I pop the hood while the engine is still hot, I notice a very slight burnt smell coming from under the hood

I'LL SORTA START THIS. MAY HAVE TO ASK FOR HELP, IF SOMEONE ELSE DON'T JUMP IN

YOUR A/C MAY JUST BE LOW ON GAS---NORMALLY (USED TO) A SHOP WAS ABOUT THE ONLY ONE WHO COULD DO THIS. AND STILL IF IT IS SOMETHING MORE INVOLVED, THEY MAY HAVE TO CHECK IT OUT

NOW DAYS, IF YOU HAVE A REALLY SLOW LEAK, YOU MIGHT ADD "A SHOT" OF FREON YOURSELF

I SAW, JUST TODAY, A BIG "FLOAT" IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FLOOR AT ADVANCE AUTO--THE TOP OF THE FLOAT GAVE STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS---THE BOTTOM WAS A DISPLAY OF THE A/C PRODUCTS

THE 1ST THING TO DO IS HOOK UP AND DETERMINE IF YOU ARE LOW OR EMPTY

IF YOU ARE EMPTY, YOU MAY HAVE LOST A BUNCH OF OIL TOO--IN THIS CASE, I RECOMMEND A SHOP

IF YOU ARE A BIT LOW----A "SHOT" MAY LAST YOU THE WHOLE SUMMER OR MORE. EVEN WITH A TEENY LEAK

DEPENDING ON THE STORE YOU GO TO--THAT LONG TIME, COMPETENT EMPLOYEE MIGHT ASSIST YOU WITH THIS IN THE PARKING LOT

OTHER THINGS COULD BE WRONG ALSO. THIS MAY NOT BE YOUR MIRACLE

READING AND UNDERSTANDING DIRECTIONS IS A REAL PLUS DOING ANYTHING TO YOUR RIG

AS FAR AS THE HUMMING NOISE---MOST LIKELY NOT A/C RELATED UNLESS YOU CAN HEAR IT UNDER THE HOOD AT THE A/C COMPRESSOR (LIKE BEARINGS GOING OUT IN IT)

WHILE UNDER THE HOOD, THROTTLE IT BY HAND OR HAVE YOUR PAL APPLY GAS PEDAL AND LISTEN FOR THE NOISE (PARKED OF COURSE---E-BRAKE ON---PAL AWAY FROM THE SHIFTER!)

PUSHING THE BRAKE PEDAL SHOULD BE ADDED INTO THE EQUATION

SOMETIMES IF IT'S HARD TO PIN POINT IT---A 2-3 FOOT SECTION OF HEATER HOSE OR GARDEN HOSE CRAMMED IN YOUR EAR MAKES AN EXCELLENT STETHOSCOPE

THIS COULD BE ANYTHING FROM A BEARING SOMEWHERE---TO A VACUUM LINE WITH A HOLE IN IT

REMEMBER!

THERE'S PESKY MOVING PARTS UNDER THERE---BE CAREFUL!--BE SAFE!

YOU DO NOT WANT TO BECOME THE "WHINING SOUND" UNDER THERE!

IF YOU AIN'T GETTING NOWHERE---DRIVE AROUND AND HAVE YOU PAL HANG HIS HEAD OUT THE WINDOWS---ATTEMPTING TO ISOLATE WHICH SIDE---FRONT OR REAR

HAVE HIM "STETHOSCOPE" ALL AROUND THE DASH OR FLOORBOARDS---GET A GENERAL LOCATION AS TO WHERE IT'S LOUDEST

THE PARTS STORE GUY MAY BE HELPFUL IN A "FREE DIAGNOSIS" OR RETURN HERE WITH YOUR FINDINGS

REGARDLESS----LET US KNOW IF YOU GET IT FIXED OR NEED MORE ASSISTANCE

A CJ OR A WRANGLER MIGHT BE A BETTER CHOICE. Lol!

Thanks. I agree with the wrangler or CJ! The humming only happens when the car is moving and become noticeable when I reach about 30 and apply brakes. Could a bearing in the a/c condenser becauseing this noise because of the stress its getting when the car is moving?

OK, I'M BACK

ANY PROGRESS?

I COULD SEE THE ENGINE STRESS THING, IF IT DIDN'T MAKE THE RACKET TILL THE ENGINE REACHED A CERTAIN RPM (NOT TRAVEL SPEED) FOR INSTANCE "2200 RPM"---"2200 RPM CAN BE REPRODUCED IN THE DRIVEWAY IN "PARK".....AND IT WOULD MAKE THE NOISE IN A NON-MOVING MODE

THE "ONLY WHEN BRAKING PART", IS THE PART THAT WOULD MOST LIKELY RULE OUT BELT DRIVEN ACCESSORIES

HOW 'BOUT THE PAL ASSISTANT LOOKING FOR THE GENERAL AREA, WHILE DRIVING?

I'M HERE TO HELP, AND IT SEEMS PROGRESS IS SLOW

HELP...MEANS ANY WAY I CAN, WHICH MIGHT EXPEDITE YOUR REPAIR

I'M NOT GONNA JUST TELL YOU TO TAKE IT TO A SHOP AND SPEND MONEY

BUT YOU MUST SHOW SOME SORT OF APPRECIATION, IN SOME MANNER TO KEEP THIS RESOURCE ALWAYS AVAILABLE TO YOU!

ALONG WITH PRAISE OF THE OPERATION--THIS, IN MY LINK SEEMS TO WORK BEST.....KINDA LANGUAGE EVERYONE CAN UNDERSTAND

THESE "LITTLE OPERATION" GUYS KNOW THEIR STUFF, I FEEL CERTAIN THEY MIGHT RIDE WITH YOU, AND GIVE YOU A ON THE SPOT DIAGNOSIS

YOUR TAKE ON WHAT I'M SHOVELING?
