Automatic - not going into gear?

Every now and then when I am driving around my car will slip from 4th gear down to what seems like 1st gear, I then have to pull over to the side of the road, put it in park then back to drive and it goes fine - it is starting to happen more frequently.
any ideas what this could be?

Internal issue with the trans.

Is there a check engine light?

Yes, this comes on when I start the car, put turns off again (as like the battery light, oil light etc)

I would go to a trans shop and have them check it for you.
