what can make the van have a burning smell, I think it could have something to do with the radiator/coolant

Check for coolant and oil leaks onto the exhaust, this is often a cause for these hot burning smells and check that the exhaust has not picked up a plastic bag under the car, this can also smell for some time before it burns off.
