what makes my car clunk into gear and have little power

when i start my car at the first time when its cold i let it run til its warm and it will clunk into gear. i shut it off and start back up right away and it will go into gear smoothly and have full power

Check transmission fluid level and condition. You want the fluid to be a red color, with no brown tint or burned smell to it. You also want no grit or shavings in the fluid.

If it's not fluid related, have it scanned for transmission codes and let us know what turns up.
