I have only been able to get 2 and 4th gear contacted local mechanic who tells me it would only be a pin...or something like that is this correct and how would I go about repairing or replacing the pin ???

You will have to remove the consul and the transmission selector is then accessible, if you can physically select all gear positions and only pick up 2nd & 4th remove the selector head and see if you can select other gears using a lever in the socket that the gear stick sits in, if you can have a good look at the nylon bush that is at the bottom of the gear shifter, let me know what you find.
