I have a 2000 gmc sierra with a 5 speed manual transmission and a 4.8 liter motor. When I start out sometimes it will kick out of 1st gear and go into neutral. It make a loud clunk sound. The shifter is as far up as it will go and it goes into gear fine.

Check to make sure the linkage is properly adjusted and nothing is loose. If all looks good, I would question the synchronizers in the transmission. One may be bad.

After thought. Are you sure the gear lube is clean and full in the transmission?

Let me know what you find. Also, in addition to making sure it is full, make sure it is clean.
