When the "Auto" setting is used, the light comes on but I can tell that the transfer case is in 4hi(feel front wheels pulling while turning on dry pavement). All other setting function properly (2hi, 4hi, 4low). Ideas?

If you feel it on a dry surface, it is working.

"Auto" four wheel drive should not be engaging on a dry surface. It's designed to engage, similar to 4 hi, during loss of traction. It should be free wheeling, similar to 2hi, the instant traction is found, i.e. a dry road. I was using it on an icy road and noticed that the front wheels did not disengage when returning to the dry roadway. I think GMC calls it Traction Control on the push button four wheel drive.
