2000 gmc savana won't start. has power to the module side of the ignition coil, but the coil side plug has no power. Is that plug supposed to have power, or not? If so, how do I trace down the where the power issue is?

That sounds correct. Power isn't supplied from the coil until it is cranking. Check the crank sensor.

I bought a new distributor since I had already purchased so many parts of one anyway. However, the new one wouldn't line up with where the old one came out. I marked the button on a bolt and the one would not slide into that same position. Any ideas?

If it is the same, it should work. Try to move it slightly and wiggle it into place.
