Gas fumes in cabin

We have a 2000 Ford Windstar that has a raw gas smell in the cabin after the car heats up. The gas tank is pressureized and vapors pour out of the gas cap when loosened. The car seems to do this more when the gas tank is over a half tank. What can cause this?

Suspect problem in EVAP system there should not be pressure release when cap removed. Is check engine light on?
