Popping clicks that seem to come from my exhaust and sound like overheated metal cooling. Could be from? These appear first after driving for some time (until engine temp is at about midlevel) and continue after car is shut off.

That's just normal sound of the pipes cooling.

. That's what I thought initially, but it is really loud (like corn popping against a lid, best I can describe it) and can be heard while I'm standing at stop lights etc. Surely my pipes aren't cooling while I'm still driving? Is there anything "above" the exhaust, or in the general vicinity that could make such a noise and overheat for some reason. I'm not trying to "create" a problem, but I also don't want to make something worse if it's not cooling pipes.

Metal expands and contracts when it's heated and cooled. That's what you're hearing.
