why does my car stall when put in reverse?

the car runs fine everything works good. but everytime i put the car in reverse the car wants to die. the rpm drops to nearly 0 and the goes above 1 rpm. when it does that it sometimes pulls the car back hard, if i dont have the brakes firm it will go back.and sometimes when i put it in reverse the car just dies
