Your dipstick tube may be rotted and have holes in it. If this is the case, the stick may end up going through the hole in the tube, and not go into the oil pan where it should, resulting in no oil showing on the dipstick. I just had a friend drop off his 2000 explorer with this problem.

Same problem here. 2000 XLT 5.0. There is a hole punched through right at the bend where it turns into the pan. Where does one purchase a properly sized (length) dipstick tube to replace? This is a first for me.
