my 2000 ford explorer is making a horrendous binding, clicking and popping noise from the drivers side front wheel area. I pulled the tire and found @ a half inch of slop in CV axle. When turning the hub though, the noise and bind seems to be coming from the front driveshaft. What is your take on the problem?

Can you be a little more specific on where you're seeing this play in the C/V?

The play on the C/V is going in and out of the front differential. I had a guy turning the hub with tire on and the noise is definitely coming from the front drve shaft. not sure if its the u-joint or a bad diff.

You're just going to have to inspect the driveshaft to find out. You may have to disconnect it from the differential to get a clear picture. Look for any rust coming out of any of the cups.
