My 2000 Ford escort zx2 is overheating while I drive it. Could this be the thermostat or other problem?

While driving the car, I noticed the temp rose to close to hot. I stopped and let the engine cool. This happened again the next day I drove the car. What could be causing this?

Did you check the coolant level?
Are the cooling fans coming on?
