i have a rattling in my transmision, what could be causing this?

if you put car into reverse rattling gets louder. if placed in any other gear rattling lowers.

Are you sure it is from the transmission or something loose rattling? If the noise is external, the engine mounts are bad ans something elses ia loose. You need to locate the source of the noise.
