Won't even attempt to start.

When I turn the key to the on position the pump kicks on and all of the lights turn on as they should. When I turn to the start position, nothing happens. the lights remain on as though the key is still in the on position. There is no click under the hood, the starter doesn't spin. Absolute silence under the hood.
