What could cause a gas smell through the vents, when I first start the car an turn the heat on. After the car warms up it quits.

What quits, the engine or the smell? If it's the smell that stops, look at the injectors before or right after starting and immediately stopping the engine. That will insure fuel pressure is up so a leak will be evident. If there's wetness around the injectors, suspect o-rings between the injectors and fuel rail that are shrinking in the cold weather.
