start it up and let it heat up and it makes a pecking sound i thought it might of been the rod bearings but found out it wasnt and then i found metal shavings in the oil screen.

You should take a sample of the metal shavings to a mechanic and see if they feel it is white metal, this is the basis of engine bearings, but if you have an engine knock, and with these shavings, i will probably be a failed bearing.
