Hi I recently replace my a/c compressor(used) on my 2000 dodge intrepid and it seems to work fine with a Freon smell. But 2 days afters the cold air was gone and the bad Freon smell coming out of the vents when I use it, even if I use only the heather so if you have any suggestions I'll appreciate it

You have a leak somewhere and it could be from the cooling coil. You would need to get the system tested for leaks and rectify it.

MAYBE YOUR HEATER CORE IS LEAKING

IF IT'S NOT MUCH, IT MAY BE EVAPORATING SLOWLY AND NOT BE EZily DETECTED

IF IT'S A NICE LEAK, YOU MAY SEE COOLANT DRIPPING FROM THE A/C PAN DRAIN ON THE ENGINE SIDE OF THE FIREWALL (WHERE THE A/C NORMALLY DRIPS CONDENSATION). CATCHING SOME IN A WHITE STYROFOAM CUP MAY LET YOU SEE THE COOLANT COLOR

IT WOULD HAVE TO BE A REALLY GOOD LEAK TO SEE YOUR COOLANT LEVEL DROP AT THE RADIATOR IN A SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME. HOWEVER, OVER TIME YOU MIGHT DETECT THE LOSS

IF YOU WANNA DUPLICATE A COOLANT SMELL. PUT A SPOONFUL OR TWO OF YOUR COOLANT INTO A CLEANED OUT TIN CAN. HEAT IT ON THE STOVE AT A LOW TEMPERATURE AND THROW THE OLE SNIFFER NEAR IT TO SEE IF THAT'S THE SMELL YOU ARE EXPERIENCING. LIKE AROUND 200 DEGREES IS ALL YOU NEED TO MIMIC YOUR CAR'S OPERATING TEMPERATURE

IF YOU ARE LEAKING ENOUGH FREON TO SMELL IT (IF THAT'S POSSIBLE), SURELY YOUR SYSTEM WOULD BE LOW ON GAS, AND THE LOW PRESSURE SWITCH WOULDA CUT THE COMPRESSOR OFF. OR IT WILL SOON

KEEP US POSTED

Hi thanks for the info, my car never had this smell before, and my coolant level is always normal, never have to add any, the smell started right after I put the freon in the a/c system, now i'm a little concern because now is getting cold at night and when I use the heather it starts smelling really bad, but when I dont use it there is no smell. Hope you can help me.

Are you sure it is freon you are smelling? Freon itself does not smell pungent.

What else could it be then, it all started the minute I put the freon, is like if the freon got into the compartment box where the heater core is. Do you think that if I empty all the freon the smell will desapear?

First thing is you should not be discharging freon unnecessarily.
Have the freon pressure checked.

If it is any fault with the freon leakage, you would get the smell when you use either heater or A/C.

ASSUMING. THAT YOUR A/C HAD NOT WORKED FOR A PERIOD OF TIME, AND THE HEAT WAS NOT NEEDED FOR A WHILE

. YOU RECKON YOU POSSIBLY MIGHT HAVE A DECEASED CRITTER SOMEWHERE IN THE DUCT SYSTEM?

MAYBE THE BLOWER MAY NOT HAVE BEEN USED RECENTLY UNTIL YOU CHARGED UP THE A/C?

JUST SORTA SLINGIN' A POSSIBLY, IT DOES HAPPEN!
