squealing

when i start up my 2000 dodge dakota 4 cyl 5 speed manual it squeals really loud for a few swconds then quits but if i turn on the heater/air condisioning it stays on squealing how do i fix this please?

Tug on the serpentine belt, (engine not running, of course), then see if it tightens up again when you release it. If it does not, suspect a weak or rusted spring-loaded tensioner.

Next, while it's running and squealing, dribble a little water onto the smooth backside of the belt. If the noise changes, check for a misaligned pulley or a worn belt.
