2000 Dodge Dakota CAR SHUTTING OFF

ONCE I START THE CAR, THE RPM NEEDLE WILL GO UP M, STAY A FEW SECONDS THEN GO DOWN AND CAR SHUTS DOWN. PROBLEM STARTED LAST WEEK WHEN I WAS DRIVING ON EXPRESSWAY AND I NOTICED THAT AS I ACCELERATED, IT WAS LIKE CHOKING, GOT OFF EXPRESSWAY AND STAYED ON STREETS AND IT DIDN'T DO IT ANYMORE, UNTIL A WEEK LATER THEN THE SHUTTING OFF PROBLEM STARTED, DOESN'T DO IT ALL THE TIME, AND OF COURSE NOT DOING IT FOR MY MECHANIC.

CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON SOMETIMES THEN GOES OFF FOR DAYS, OR SOMETIMES WEEKS, BUT HAS BEEN DOING THAT FOR YEARS

I THINK ITS A 4.5 LITER 8CYLINDER ENGINE

WHEN ITS HAPPENING, YES, ONCE IT SHUTS DOWN AND I RESTART, IT WILL JUST SHUT DOWN AGAIN OVER AND OVER, UNTIL THE CAR STARTS RUNNING NORMALLY
