2000 Dodge Dakota 4 7v8 4wd Put Front Wheels Lock Take Out Light Off Comes

4.7v8 4wd when I put it in 4wd the front wheels lock in but when I take it out the 4wd light goes off and it comes out of 4wd but it sounds like the hubs are still locked in and if I keep driving eventualy it releases but when it does it makes a loud bang noise.

the hubs may be worn out and not working correctly have them checked
