while driving to work the trac off light came on and everything shut down ,car died ,battery died ,lights went crazy blinking off and on ??

Measure the battery voltage while the engine is running and the problem is occurring. It is supposed to be between 13.75 and 14.75 volts. If it is low, measure the voltages on the two smaller wires on the back of the alternator.
