When the A/C is turned on there is a loud noise coming from the compressor but it goes away when A/C is turned off. No cooling and the air cycles through vents no mater what mode it is on

When you turn the A/C on you activate a clutch that engages the compressor, it only turns with the A/C switched on, so I feel that there is a problem with in the compressor, I feel that this should be investigated first hand by a qualified A/C tech as pressure gauges need to be hooked up to see what is going on in the compressor.
