2000 Chevrolet S-10 engine surging

Engine surges at speeds of 45 to 55 mph. Oil gauge revs up and down during surging at those speeds. Engine idles very good and runs well at speeds below 45 and above 55 mpg. Have not tried to fix the problem until I get innformation on what could be the problem.

Try unhooking the egr valve and driving it to see if the problem goes away? But before doing that have the computer scanned for codes.If there are any let me know the exact code numbers not code descriptions.
