2000 Blazer w/ 4.3 & 4WD started blowing white smoke while backing up. Temp gauge was normal. Stopped vehicle, checked coolant reservoir and added about 1/2 gal. Restarted Blazer and no white smoke from exhaust. Drove about 20 miles to home, still no smoke. Added Bars Leak Permanent Head gasket fix just as a precaution since Blazer has 165,000 miles. Let cool overnight. Started in morning, no smoke from exhaust. Engine ran fine but misses badly only in reverse gear. Any Ideas? Thanks for any input.

That is interesting. Has the check engine light come on?

No...the cel did not come on. Here's an update. Found the passenger side A.I.R. rubber elbowhose had a quarter size hole in it directing exhaust gas directly on the engine main wiring harness melting all the insulation and fusing the wires together. The valve from the exhaust to the A.I.R. system had frozen (rusted) open allowing hot exhaust gas to reach rubber hose. Chevrolet knew about this problem (TSB) but no longer produces part to fix it and knows about the wiring issue but will not stand behind their product. I spent $1722 for a wiring harness, $326 for an ECM, and had to replace the entire wiring harness requiring the lifting of the body 2" off the frame and removal of the distributor to route the wires to the transmission and transfer case. Chevrolet wanted $3,333 to do this job because of a design flaw they knew about. Got it fixed and trading it in on a Toyota. Beware of the evil A.I.R. system. Thanks for your reply, Allen (70 years with GM and going to Toyota)
