Yesterday we heard some rattling in the rear of the car. It was fairly loud. My son said it sounded like someone put a wrench in a tin bucket and duct taped it to the bottom of the car. Soon after, we lost 3rd and 4th gear. We could still use 1st and 2nd and heedno problem with them. Are there gears in the big ball on the back axle that could have gone bad and done this?

The fact that you have lost 2 gears tells you that your problem is inside the transmission. This is serious and you're likely going to have to rebuild/replace the transmission. DO NOT DRIVE it any further.
