Problem began about a year ago, auto transfer lights would switch on their own, last winter couldn't use auto4wd, mechanic replaced a vacuum hose on solenoid-able to engage 2hi & left in that position, started acting up again after a month or so / currently shifts into 4lo-can't drive thanks Jim

If you push the buttons and the lights flash BUT you don't hear the encoder motor OR the relays in the transfer case control module (tucked in the passenger foot well behind the kick plate)clicking. The control switches in the dash have failed. Common problem with them. If the lights flash and you DO hear the control module clicking but no encoder motion then it's the control module itself, or the actuator. Look online and you will find a way to test the encoder with a meter and a jumper wire to the battery.
