2000 astro - died accelerating up a small hill,restart so rough it won't run,

black drip from exhaust - put 2 heets in case water in fuel, maybe not as bad but still too rough to run. Had just filled tank from 1/4 to full.(maybe 10 miles prior). Thought of adding more heet, but not sure if that is safe. I live 20 miles from town (friends towed it to my house, now stranded, and beyond broke so looking for some idea of things I could check or try short of a tow to town for expensive repairs. One suspects CO2 sensor, but another says it would start and run til it got warm enough to call for the sensor. Wonder if black drip from exhaust is clear indicator of water+ fuel.Wonder if clogged filter would have died all at once like that or is more likely to have at least sputtered a bit first...Thanks so much.
