Horn relay location. My horn quit working right after reconnecting the negative battery terminal

I can not find the horn relay or the horn wires coming from the steering wheel. The contacts in the steering wheel are bad. Instead of changing the steering wheel or column, I just want to put a push button on the dash. None of the Chiltons on Haynes manuals have those wires on any of the schematics. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome, the horn relay shows to be in the convenience center, driver side of dash, sorry I don't have a picture. There is probably a multiwire connector lower part of steering column, look for the black wire, hopefully there is only one, that wire is ground for the horn relay. The horn switch is a ground for that relay. If you use a jumper ground connected to chassis, touch the black wire, the horn should honk. If it doesn't you either have the wrong wire or something else is wrong.

HI:
First make sure the fuse isn't bad. If it's good, locate the horn. It should be near the side of the radiator, and have s helper press the horn while you check for power. If there is power, replace the horn, one wire and a bolt. If there is no power, check the horn relay.

My horn quit working. I tested it directly on battery and its ok. I had a recent fuel pump replaced and the heater fan quit too. Tested fan directly on battery and its ok so is fan switch I think. Horn is priority but would like to fix both. I need more wiring diagrams to fix or your best info on subject. Thanks.

The horn has suddenly stopped working. Tested by connecting the horn directly to the battery & works just fine. Fuse for the horn in the fuse box is fine. Took voltage reading on the terminal wire where it connects to the horn & there is no voltage. Removed the plastic horn cover on the steering wheel, inspected the horn wire & contact, which looks fine. What else can I check? Is there a horn relay, if so what's it look like & where's it located? What else could be causing this? THANKS in advance! ?

You said you tested the voltage. When you took the cover off of the sterring wheel, did you remove the horn pad from the sterring wheel? There is a single wire that feeds to the pad, detach it and test for:
1) power 12volts or so
2) continuity

It is likely to be your horn pad. As it ages, especially in the hotter climates this will distort and warp. When you press the pad contact is not being made.
Try replacing with a used horn pad. Pay as little as possible. If this does not work you will not be out a lot of cash. New ones from retail stores/ dealership are not returnable because it is considered an electrical part.

Yes, I did remove the horn pad from the steering wheel. There's a metal strip that's connected to the bottom of the pad, which makes contact with the big nut that holds the steering wheel on when the horn pad is pressed causing the horn to blow. There is also a wire connected to a terminal on the bottom of the horn pad, but I didn't think to check for voltage there. I will do this asap.

I did take a wire with an alligator clip at each end & connected one end to the metal clip on the horn pad & the other end to the steering wheel nut (to similate pressing the horn pad) & the horn didn't blow.

How is ground provided to the center shaft on a chevy astro van. Van was stolen and I replaced the column with an 85 column everything works except the horn. With the ignition off the lock pin engages the lock plate and and provides ground for the horn. I have very carefully examined the old column and can not find a ground path either. The steering column is not grounded with the key turned on and goes to 12V when I push the horn button.

The outer column is grounded just fine in 2 spots, at the firewall the floor plate is welded to the outer column housing and the 2 bolts holding the column to the dash, I checked those points. next step is to dissassemble the entire column and look for how it gets grounded. It is an automatic transmission and not a tilt column similiar to the picture below. Only the center shaft is not grounded
