After car warms up, about 5 minutes later the temp gauge pegs and light comes on. Car sounds like a diesel.

Repairs since Thursday:
Thermostat- can tell it opens, water does move in the overflow and can here slight change in motor song
Coolant temp sensor at lower hose
water pump- pump was indeed leaking at the weep

Don't know what else to do.

Maybe I should clarify, the car only sounds like a diesel when the gauge is in the red, the rest of the time it sounds normal. Poor wording on my part.

Yesterday we also put a new fan and fan clutch on. Ran great at idle for about 20 minutes and then heated up again. Wife took it around the block and car sounded fine til it heats up. There does not appear to be oil in the anti-freeze and it doesn't look like there is anti-freeze in the oil. Rods don't sound like they are knocking.

Thanks.

After further research, I learned that being very thorough in bleeding the system is very important on a beemer. It's our first one.

Once I did that, the car runs fine now.

This is why I stick with Chevy trucks.
