Hinge is broken.

The hinge should be attached to the console armrest and the console with 2-4 screws per side. They're usually Phillips head, but might be Torx (star).

You must have the wrong car. It does not have screws on the side, Part of the answer is to start by removing the rear ash tray however after that I have a problem. Good guess though.

The hinge is attached to the console and the top/cover with either Phillips head screws or rivets. Rivets have to be drilled out. Take a clear closeup picture and I can give you a better idea of what to do and how to do it.
