Hi, the car runs awful and shuts off. It does restart. I have two codes P0089 and P2293. I suspect a bad high-pressure pump. Low ones been changed and sensor on fuel rail. It has according to the scanner 883 PSI at fuel rail. Is that possible? If not how do I go about troubleshooting this code? The fuel pump cam looks good also. Thanks for your time and help. Neil

Hi,

The fuel pressure you indicated is very possible with a high-pressure pump.

Here is what I feel is happening: Both codes are related to fuel pressure. In this case, the pressure appears to be too low. Additionally, the P2293 is specifically related to fuel pressure regulator valve 2. I suspect the regulator is the problem, but diagnostics need to be completed to confirm.

If you look at the pics below, they are the diagnostics specific to the P2293 code. Take a look through them and let me know if you are comfortable doing them. Also, the last pic shows the location of the pressure regulator 2. It is at the rear of the engine. Make sure the wiring is not damaged and the connector is tight, in good condition, and not corroded.

Let me know what you find or if you have other questions.

Take care,

Joe

Hi Joe,

Thanks for the quick response. It's much appreciated. I just had emergency back surgery and cannot get to the car myself.
After talking to my friend whose car, it is. I knew he changed a fuel injector. He then proceeds to tell me he disconnected and connected the #2 regulator while running. Ugh!
He at this point ordered a regulator anyway. (Not my money) I told him hope the computer didn't get hurt. Look at the connection etc. The code was there prior to him disconnecting the sensor. I explained it still could be a bad high PSI pump. I dispatched at an Audi dealer for years. Finicky cars I found. Great when they are running and can be electrical nightmares all day everyday even without the owner doing their own diy. I will let you know the outcome regulator coming today.
Thanks, Stay Healthy and have a great day.

Hi,

Thanks for the update. I don't think anything would have been hurt by disconnecting it. Let me know if that takes care of the problem for you.

Take care,

Joe

Hi, he put in the # 2 valve and still had both codes. Rechecked the lower PSI pump and found a bad O-ring and it fixed the 2293 code. P0089 is still there and # 2 misfire now. They stored after driving it and it ran great in my friends' words. Stop at home was idling and started to run poorly again. He had changed the #3 injector because it was dumping fuel, dirt/bad. If #2 injector is clogged and or a restriction in the rail is present would that cause the erratic running? He's buying a stethoscope to check the injector. He did the coil and plug change/rotation. Any help is appreciated!
Thanks,
Neil

Hi Joe,

Defective. A new low-pressure pump was the problem. The scanner showed a pressure drop and the car then shut off.
Thanks for your help.

Neil,

First, you are very welcome. So, the pump was causing all the issues? Also, I'm near Pittsburgh, PA, eastern time zone. After the pump was replaced, did all codes go away?

Neil,

We aren't too far apart. LOL And the weather here is the same. One day it rains and the next, it's 10 degrees with snow. LOL

Regardless, I'm glad to hear the car is fixed. Please feel free to come back anytime in the future. You're always welcome here.

Take care,

Joe
