Put piston number one on its compression stroke/TDC then align the cam and crank. see below.

If you are setting timing up after doing a valve job you need the cam and crank lock tool to set up the timing or you will bend the valves again?

Maybe. The only way to check for sure besides tearing it down is to perform a compression check. Best to recheck all the gear settings, lock them down and rotate the engine by hand a few times to make sure they are set properly. Then perform the compression test and reassemble.

yes, because i just paid him to put the heads on, and i cannot afford to get them taken back off. He was trying to start it why it was not in timing. I was telling him I knock the car out of timing when it first back fired on me. and i think that is where he mark it. And i am thinking he does not know how to reset the timing.

He cannot get pass setting the timing. He does not know where to mark it. He tried to start it when he thought he had his marks. I do not know!

Thanks a bunch.

Okay, the image above shows the marks. But he needs the locking bar to keep the gears from turning while he installs the belt.

I agree. Whenever the variable valve timing unit hub is removed you need the cam lock tool to reinstall it since there is no guide on the cam itself. So he needs the proper tools to set the timing. I agree with rivermikerat that you should just take it to another shop that can do the job and send this guy the bill if he cannot fix it right?

First thing you need is the cam locking tool to lock cams in place. Can you get one? Let me know.

have one, but that VVT has no return spring. Keep getting a cam advanced too far code. How do you set up this VVT with the cam and which way does it move and what is its at rest position?

Is this a turbo or none turbo engine? Also, is VVT on the intake side or exhaust side?

no turbo 2.9 with CVVT and always on intake because cam sensors are always intake.
I think in this era the should monitor each cylinder o2 sensor and they should do the exhaust and two to four cams.

Slacken off, but do not remove, the (three) screws which secure the timing gear pulley to the variable valve timing (VVT) unit. Press the variable valve timing (VVT) unit/timing gear pulley on the camshaft. Install the center screw which secures the variable valve timing (VVT) unit to the camshaft and tighten slightly. Turn the variable valve timing (VVT) unit anti-clockwise as far as it will go. Remove the center screw. Position the upper timing cover. Turn the timing gear pulley clockwise until the screws at the oval holes are in the limit position. Continue turning clockwise until the timing gear pulley marking is 1 1/2 Cog before the marking on the upper timing cover. Note: Do not turn anti-clockwise during this procedure! Check that the timing gear pulley is still in the limit position in the oval holes. Tighten the center screw in the variable valve timing (VVT) unit to 120 Nm (88 ft. lbs.) . Check that the variable valve timing (VVT) unit does not rotate when tightening. Install and tighten the center plug to 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.) . Turn the variable valve timing (VVT) unit clockwise to the limit position. Turn the timing gear pulley so that the markings correspond.

I have lined both camshaft factory marks with the upper cover marks as indicated. The crankshaft pulley mark is lined up with the factory mark that is on the bottom front of engine. when l crank the engine over the front variable camshaft gets loose and it will not spin from taking the cam censor off to view the variable camshaft is turning. What is interfering with the front variable cam from turning?

Hi, i own a 2,4 liter, manual, petrol. After timing belt changed came up on my dash board engine light ECM640A camshaft reset valve. so what did that mean? Also, do i need to replace camshaft sensor? because after deleting all faulty codes car works perfect, but after two to three miles driving every thing is coming back as it was before. i mean car has no power. thanks

If light came on after the belt change that you could be off a tooth or two. Recheck that timing marks line up.
