1999 Volkswagen Passat Boot Wont Open Either Unlocking Via Key Fob Directly

The boot wont open, either with unlocking via key fob, or directly with key in tailgate. How can I fix this?

The latch has most likely malfunctioned. If there is no manual lever on the inside, you may have to attempt to remove the inner plastic panel and attempt to manual un-latch it.
