I have a 1999.5 VW Jetta manual and each time I shift in reverse as I am turning my steering wheel either to the left or right, my shifter gets stuck in reverse and doesn't allow me to shift into 1st gear or neutral. It happens often but all the time.

Check your hydraulic clutch operation. You may have a leaking slave or master cylinder. Check the flex hose too, they like to rub against the power steering lines.

Have you ever replaced your clutch? If not, it may also be your clutch acting up.
