I have a 1999 jetta mk4 when I got it it drove fine but I went to put it in reverse to back it up my driveway and it wouldn't go into reverse do I accidently jammed it and from what I'm told possibly broke the linkage, the shifter is flopping around and looks like its stuck in nuetra but when I start it and go to let it idle it's feels like its going to stall, it goes up and down and gets into what I think is third but nothing else, it won't go to the left to get into reverse or down into second or anything. Help please.

locked in 2 gears. you need a shop to manually neutral out the shifter from under the hood and determine the failure.
