engine is cranking but it just wont start

1999 vw beetle. was working just fine. turned on and drove all ok. next day won't turn on. it clicks and "tries" to turn on (sounds like it's going to) but doesnt start. is there a switch or a relay i need to look for?

check the battery for condition and starter for draw.
