What's the probable cause of engine using oil (no external leaks). approx. one quart every 500 miles

Vehicle purchased new and properly maintained; started using oil approx. three years ago; other techs indicate this year engine has known problems with so called "blow by".

Have the engine compression check to determine if its rings/valves/cylinder wear
