1999 Pontiac Firebird Driving On Highway Heard Loud Knock Clatter Motor Drivers

was driving on the highway and i heard a loud knock or clatter on the motor drivers side,suddenly the motor quit running and wont turn over.is it a rod or was that broke,it sounds like what ever it is its down by oil pan nowor or would it?whatever it is wont let the starter rotate flywheel more then a few teeth before it locks up,i even tried it manualy with a wrench....help

most likely will need to replace the motor.
