1999 Opel Astra 2 problems handbrake and steering

Problem number 1 is the steering has a play. I took my car to be fitted with new front shocks and after driving for a month the problem started.

my hand brake cable snapped and I then fitted a replacement but now the hand brake cant hold the car still in a
steep place, so the car rolls because the hand brake is not holding firmly.

please advice me on how to solve these 2 problems
