trouble shifting on an automatic transmission

i have a 1999 olds alero, and when i am driving it, it strains to shift gears, and when it does shift, it makes a clunk kind of sound, what could this be. thanks

Do you have any codes?Have you checked for codes?Also do you ever have to let up on the gas for it to shift?
