I have a 199 Olds Alero with variable assist power steering can i repace the pump with a non variable assist one

I do not believe so as the variable one has valving to react to pressure changes. You can double check this by looking up a used parts dealer on the internet and finding the variable pump and seeing if it is the same part number as the non-variable pump.
