1999 Oldsmobile 88 shifter lever

My shifter lever is moving freely without changing the transmission. It is as if it has come detached somewhere. Where do I look and what am I looking for? The transmission is in drive so the car wont start.

Under the hood on the side of the transmission you should see the linkage for the transmission. See if it moves when a helper changes the gears. See if anything is detached.
