how do you take out the battery in a 1999 olds silhouette van

There is a mounting bracket (hold down) that is flush with the battery tray. It leans against the battery and holds it tight in the tray. First, disconnect the battery terminals, remove the retaining bolt that holds the mounting bracket in place, and carefully remove the battery without shorting it.

NOTE: The hold down is a black rubber component. You may need a flash light to see it.
